Regardless of the dental treatment you need, if you’re nervous or anxious, sedation dentistry can help. From a dental cleaning to an implant—your ability to relax can help you have a more productive appointment and a more positive experience. Below are three of the most common dental treatments for which sedation dentistry can help.
- Dental cleaning – Preventive care is vital to protecting your oral health. Dental cleanings remove plaque and tartar and help prevent gum disease, bleeding, pain, and tooth loss. A comprehensive exam assists with early detection of issues that need to be treated. Sedation dentistry can help you receive regular dental cleanings and exams with ease.
- Root canal treatment – A painful infected tooth doesn’t have to be extracted. Root canal treatment removes the infection and can help save a tooth. Although many patients are anxious about this treatment, sedation dentistry helps you get the care you need so the infection won’t spread and create more problems, including gum disease, tooth loss, and jawbone damage.
- Dental crown – A badly broken, worn, or decayed tooth doesn’t have to be extracted. A dental crown is used to protect a tooth—often after root canal treatment. Although thoughts of having a damaged tooth treated and prepared for a dental crown can make you nervous, delaying the treatment can negatively impact your oral health. Sedation dentistry makes the treatment possible and positive.
Hesitant about Sedation Dentistry?
Some patients are hesitant about receiving sedation dentistry as well as any procedure they need. But patient education can help. At the Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, we explain each step of the process to help you understand what will happen and why. Our dentists have advanced training and experience in using sedation during your care.
Sedation Levels
The Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry offers two levels of sedation dentistry.
Nitrous oxide – This odorless, colorless gas is also referred to as laughing gas. You will breathe it in during dental treatment. It takes effect quickly, and it is quickly reversed.
Oral conscious sedation – Anti-anxiety medication is given to you in pill form to take in advance of your appointment with us. You will arrive at our office relaxed. You won’t be disturbed by the sights and sounds of dental tools or your procedure. After your appointment, you will still be drowsy, so you’ll need transportation to and from your dental appointment.
