Porcelain veneers can create absolutely stunning smiles. At the Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry,  our dentists create lustrous smiles with veneers. They correct chips in teeth, provide a uniform look, and create healthy natural-looking vibrancy. But some people who have received veneers from other dental practices are disappointed. Why the disappointment? We’ll discuss four common problems people have with their porcelain veneers. But we’ll also give you insights on how to avoid them and get porcelain veneers that you’ll love.

  1. Bulky Teeth

Some people who receive porcelain veneers end up with big bulky teeth. More often than not, this happens when an unskilled dentist attempts to use an ultra-thin variety, such as Lumineers. They are advertised as a no-prep option, so the dentist does not have to reshape your natural teeth before placing Lumineers. When teeth are prepared for porcelain veneers, tooth structure is only reduced by a few millimeters, but it prevents teeth from looking bulky.

  1. Gray or Brown Stains

Sometimes a person’s teeth look fantastic at the start, but eventually staining around the edges begins to appear. This is different than noticing stain across the surface of a tooth, which can result if teeth are continuously cleaned with an abrasive substance, such as whitening toothpaste.

Staining at the margin where a porcelain veneer meets your gumline can be caused by a few factors:

  • An untrained dental hygienist using abrasives during the polishing process.
  • A dentist used an agent to control bleeding during the procedure and didn’t completely rinse it away.
  • Or perhaps moisture was left on the tooth, the bond wasn’t properly sealed, and there was leakage beneath the veneer.
  1. Rough Spots or Floss Catchers

Your tooth should feel completely smooth after the procedure. If it isn’t, the problem could be a poor-fitting restoration or excess bonding material on the tooth. While this may seem like a minor annoyance, these rough spots can accumulate plaque and bacteria. If it is not corrected, tooth decay will result. At the Atlanta Center for Cosmetic Dentistry, our dentists ensure your porcelain veneers have a smooth finish.

  1. Dull and Unnatural-Looking Teeth

Natural teeth are not solid blocks. Your body forms them in layers. The outermost layer has a bit of translucency to it. It takes an artistic dentist to use dental materials in a way that will recreate the translucency of natural teeth.

What’s the Solution?

With the exception of rough spots caused by excess bonding material, all of the above issues can only be corrected by replacing the porcelain veneers. Many of Dr. King’s patients who visit her after disappointment with porcelain veneers that they received from another practice need new veneers. But they get the stunning smile they want from the Atlanta Center of Cosmetic Dentistry.
